Patients who have been through the devastating effects of breast cancer are being helped to feel whole again, with thanks to pioneering breast reconstructive techniques now available at The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust.

Thanks to the donation of a medial tattoo machine, consultant plastic surgeon Mr Le-Roux Fourie is now able provide women who have had breast reconstruction with a natural looking nipple and surrounding area.

The Precision Plus Micropigmentation System was donated to the Trust by Diane Forshaw from Finishing Touches who designed and manufactured the machine specifically for medical use.

Mr Le-Roux Fourie, who is renowned as being one of the leading consultants in his field when it comes to medical tattooing on the breasts, said: “This pioneering tattoo machine enables me to create an extremely natural looking nipple and areola. I’m also a painter and the skills I’ve learnt doing that have helped me literally paint a nipple on the patient.

“The effects of breast cancer are devastating for women. Having this procedure helps to restore the woman’s confidence and improve her body image. My patients love the results, they say it makes them feel whole again and gives them their breast back.”

Mrs Irene Dowd, a patient of Mr Fourie, had the tattooing procedure and has been delighted with the results. She said: “Before having the procedure I just couldn’t look at myself in the mirror. I can’t believe how natural it looks, it’s given me so much more confidence. It’s so nice to feel normal again and just like everyone else. I’d recommend the procedure to other women that have been through what I have.”

Diane Forshaw from Finishing Touches who donated the machine said: “Mr Fourie does fantastic work. He’s a specialist in his field and it’s wonderful to see the machine being used in such expert hands. There are only a small number of hospitals in the country that are using this pioneering equipment and I would love to see this procedure as a natural closure to the surgery for all breast reconstruction patients.”
