Long before Barack Obama was elected the 44th president of the United States Amy Smith knew she wanted to commemorate his historic run for office with something special. She wanted something that would not soon be forgotten, and that would require a lot of pain to get. She wanted a tattoo of the politician.
When Smith, 24, noticed a note on Katalist Konsepts Tattoo studio's
myspace page for a free Obama tattoo she didn't think twice.
"There was no hesitation," Smith said. "My friends even thought I was crazy."
Crazy or not, Smith was the first to reply to the note that Zach Shell, owner of Katalist Konsepts, 619 S. College Ave. suite 16, had put online, and she won the free tattoo valued at $500.
Smith, who already had four tattoos, said the tattoo was not so much about Obama becoming president but rather how far he had come to run for president.
The tattoo is of the iconic Obama red and blue "Hope" image prominently used throughout the election. The image is inspired by stencil artist Shepard Fairley, best known for his Andre the Giant "Obey" image.
Shell chose the location and size of the tattoo, which is on Smith's right calf and is about 8 inches tall and 5 inches wide.
